Umeå Cricket Club is a non-profit sports organization and an active member of Svenska Cricketförbundet.
Why and for Whom?
UCC aims to introduce and promote the game of cricket in Sweden with a particular focus in Umeå and nearby areas. UCC gladly welcomes everyone interested in the game of cricket regardless of one’s nationality, age, and gender. UCC engages both its members (new to the game or professionals) and non-member participants such as students, school kids, and refugees in different cricket activities. In addition, UCC arranges tournaments in Umeå and actively participates in matches arranged by Svenska Cricketförbundet and its member clubs.
UCC is located in the wonderful city of Umeå. Umeå was the European Capital of Culture in 2014. The city is also known as the city of birches.
How it started?
Although cricket was not new to Umeå as several international students from cricketing countries occasionally played the game, yet there was no organized platform that could help facilitate the game in a professional way. Identifying this need, a PhD student from Umeå University—Tatbeeq Raza Ullah —founded Umeå Cricket Club in 2012 and registered it with the Umeå Municipality with other active players and friends, Junaid Mohsin and Nasir Mehmood in October 2012. Under their leadership, the club developed quite fast and expanded to include people from multiple countries including Sweden, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, England, Srilanka, and Afghanistan.
